Times tables- understanding and applying them

If you use and like my resources, please consider buying a book for my school- it would be much appreciated! Link can be found here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/1SHNC70FLSPI8?ref_=wl_share

All children learn times tables, but quite often they don’t seem to be able to apply what they have learned to different concepts. I’ve shared this times table poster before showing where times tables are used across the curriculum. The more confident children are in them, the easier they will often then find tackling other concepts much easier.

In order to build fluency in times tables, I decided to look at what times tables could look like across the school. First, I divided the times tables up and ordered them into how I would focus on them: starting with the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, then moving on to the rest until all 66 facts have been covered.

With 66 facts, there are enough to focus on two a week for a year. I then looked through the curriculum and decided what each year group should be able to do with a multiplication fact. Here are the main skills that I identified for each year group.

As a school, we will then focus on one multiplication fact at a time (moving up to 2 a week once the system is established) by spending a few minutes a day sharing the above concepts and building up to a comprehensive understanding of the fact. This means that every year, each child will revisit the same facts but going into more depth and linking it to the learning of their current year group. Here is the worked example of what that could look like:

My hope is that with regular practice, children will begin to become more fluent with manipulating the facts that they are learning.

I’ve also made array posters which I will display on my working wall and annotate with facts on post-it notes across the week.

I’d really love to know what you think!
